HOUSTON, Jan 27 (Reuters) - Union and oil company negotiators continued talks on Friday for a new three-year contract for workers at nearly two-thirds of U.S. crude oil refining capacity as the deadline for a strike nears, representatives of the two sides said.
Both sides have had little to say in the 10 days of negotiations. Talks are expected to continue through the weekend to prevent workers at dozens of refineries from walking off their jobs as early as 12 a.m. on Wednesday if no new deal is reached.
For the first time since negotiations began, the United Steelworkers union sounded a hopeful note in a message on Friday to its members.
'We remain optimistic that a mutually satisfactory agreement can be reached,' the union said.
Shell Oil Co, the lead negotiator for U.S. refiners had a similar statement.
'Shell remains optimistic that a mutually satisfactory agreement can be negotiated with the USW,' spokeswoman Emily Oberton said on Friday in a statement.
As much as 11 percent of U.S. refining capacity may shutdown in the first three months of a strike, sources have said.
Industry analysts have said the chance of a strike is slim.
The head of the union negotiating team, USW International Vice President Gary Beevers, has said he would call a strike if refiners are unwilling to agree to new health and safety protections for workers.
In addition to shutdowns, refiners have also prepared temporary workers to keep refineries in operation in event of a work stoppage.
